The New York Times continues to hammer on the New York City Correction Commissioner Joseph Ponte, writing in an editorial board essay Monday that the public’s confidence in Ponte is in question. “Officers who ignored or even condoned that culture [of violence at Rikers Island jail] were moved steadily up the ladder into management,” the essay states.

Ponte had promoted William Clemons against the advice of a report based on a 2012 investigation of the jail, as previously covered on this blog. Clemons and two others announced plans to step down a week ago.
